Spring 2019

Published 12 Apr 2019 at 12:50

It's been ages since I last added a bit of news to the website! I've been busy at home, working on college assignments, it's the most fun returning to education, I love it. It's a great feeling taking control and making change in my life and career. After the Easter break will be my final term at Leek College, it's been a fantastic experience. Last summer I was worrying about money and looking at part-time work but feeling utterly despondent about the type of work available to me with my qualifications and feeling as though I didn't want to paint any more (I seem to go through these painting slumps, particularly after commissions). I decided I wanted to do a useful job, one which would [...]

I took part in a couple of exhibitions recently. First was the Moorlands Open, a favourite of mine as it's inclusive and showcases all the talent from the area where I live (there are a LOT of talented artists in the Moorlands!). This was held at the Nicholson Institute in Leek.

2017 Favourite Paintings

Published 26 Feb 2018 at 20:03

Just a quick look back over the last year and the paintings I made. I started 2017 all mixed up and unsure of what I wanted to be painting - I chop and change a lot, I'm beginning to get used to it!
Anyway, I ended up making a lot of buttery abstracts with red/rose tones... They're my favourites from 2017.

I made a few inky paintings in January after a long dark walk along the lanes near my house. They're inspired by the funny almost primal fear the darkness brings out in me, but also by the beauty of the velvety darkness and the friendly sound of the wind moving through the branches of the trees.

Limited by Saatchi Art

Published 29 Sep 2017 at 12:26

Saatchi Art have recently launched a special prints site focussing on limited edition prints from a selection of artists. I was surprised and really pleased to be asked to participate, particularly as I feel as though I've been wildly inconsistent in terms of my painting output over the last 4 years or so.

You can read more about Limited by Saatchi Art here. Naturally, these prints will only be available through this programme and will not be repeated at a later date either directly through me or a 3rd party. I just thought I would underline that point!

Chester Arts Centre Open Art

Published 29 Sep 2017 at 10:58

I was really pleased to have a couple of my pieces selected for the very different Chester Open Art exhibition which was organised by the folk at Chester Arts Centre and is currently drawing to a close after being up all Summer. There's a link here to their Facebook page, they're a very inclusive and diverse space working tirelessly to promote art in all its forms and make it accessible to all.

The exhibtion was fuelled by a desire to bring art to people who wouldn't normally attend an exhibition in a traditional gallery setting. The artwork was all supplied as hi-res digital files, printed out by the gallery and exhibited as affordable prints. I think this is a really wonderful way to approach such [...]

There are a couple of upcoming group exhibitions, 3 in fact so scrap the 'couple'. I have been meaning to send some work over to the Rochester Contemporary Art Center for years now. I always see the call-out for artwork donations and like the size restriction/wonder what I would make on such a small scale (all artworks are to be 6 x 6"). I made 4 very pleasing little pastel-coloured gouache paintings, pictured below.

Blog Feature

I was contacted the other day by David Lange, a fellow artist based in Shelbyville in the States. David creates the most fantastic images, his use of colour is truly sublime - I particularly like his telephone poles. David got in touch to let me know he'd written a blog featuring my work and wow, he writes beautifully. It was a great time for him to get in touch because I'd had a rubbish week and his post cheered me up no end. You can read the blog post here and view more of David's work here.

Art Slant Prize

I entered Round 7 of this year's Art Slant Prize; I only remembered to do so at the last minute and had to spend ages in Photoshop getting the image cropped correctly. Lucky I bothered, I was one of the winners in the abstract category. You can see the image below, it's Fuu, a 2016 painting I'm really fond of.

Art Pistol

Published 29 Jul 2016 at 12:07

I am really pleased to share the news that my paintings are now on Art Pistol, a gallery located in Glasgow and online. I was really chuffed to get my work back on their website after I left them a couple of years ago (I was trying to simplify things by having my work on fewer sites). Art Pistol have an amazing collection of artists (hence why I am chuffed to be amongst them), some seriously inspiring painting (I really love the work of painter Eleanor Carlingford).

"Art Pistol is the sort of art gallery that the internet and Glasgow needs – we hear you. Giving emerging artists a real shot, and generally promoting the very best of independent UK and international artists. We’ve [...]
