Fran, 2008
I have always felt inspired by the vastness of the sky and the ever-changing cloud formations found there so this is always the starting point for my paintings although they inevitably incorporate many other ideas and themes.
I do not seek to re-create what I see or photograph faithfully, more to re-create a feeling experienced, a sense of space or simply the joy at viewing something breathtaking and beautiful.
The works evolve up until their completion in much the same way as the sky is always changing its colour and shape. During this process I usually make impulsive colour choices that are often completely unrelated to the painting's starting point and selected purely because I find them aesthetically pleasing. My paintings also contain many spontaneous, expressive gestures and scribbles although these are often layered over, leaving only the sections that work well for me, in terms of the composition of the final piece.
